Косвенная речь – это способ передать слова человека. При этом вы не воспроизводите его речь дословно, а лишь пересказываете ее.
John: “I want to eat”. – прямая речь.
John said he wanted to eat. – Косвенная речь.
При переводе прямой речи в косвенную в английском, мы получаем сложное предложение:
John said … – главное предложение, которое стоит в форме Past Simple.
… he wanted to eat. – придаточное предложение
При переводе прямой речи в косвенную не забывайте о смене грамматических времен согласно таблице:

| can —> could | (Tom said) I can’t help you.’ |
| —>Tom said that he couldn’t help me. | |
| will —> would | (my friends said to me) ‘The exam will be hard.’ |
| —>My friends told me that the exam would be hard. | |
| do/does —> did | (I said) ‘Jill doesn’t play tennis.’ |
| —>I said that Jill didn’t play tennis. | |
| (he said) ‘I don’t know your name.’ | |
| —>He said that he didn’t know my name. | |
| like —> liked | (Karen said) ‘I like apples.’ |
| —>Karen said that she liked apples. | |
| go —> went | (they said) ‘We often go to the park.’ |
| —>They said that they often went to the park. |
